One day I found a lot of dirt on the patio. I didn't know why until later that day when I heard that volcano Tungurahua had exploded many miles north east of Cuenca. A variation in the normal upper air currents brought a dusting of volcanic ash to Cuenca. The airport closed for 12 hours and the road crews were busy sweeping the ash away rather than washing it away because with water the ash hardens like concrete.
