I had heard that cotton used to be grown in southern Ecuador but I was having trouble finding a resource - it certainly is not available in the stores. And then my Chilean friend Gina took me to meet an 80-something year old woman who still grows, harvests and spins her own cotton. Her name is Zoila and she lives in Tumianuma which is near Vilcabamba. Since then Gina has found another older woman named Maria Angelita who is a also a spinner so I bought some of her thread too. It is such an honor to work with this precious hand made thread. Here are some of the things I made:
