Weaving SAORI style

A beginner's weaving experience with the SAORI weaving loom.

La Feria

As soon as we got to Vilcabamba, we found out about a new arts organization called Arte Intercultural Vilcabamba started by two gringos Veronika and Karen. Their ideas and education proposals are very exciting and we are happy to be in on the ground floor of this new organization.

The organization was invited to participate in the Feria to celebrate the last day of the week-long Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival. We heard that they were bringing 3 buses of visitors from Loja and we could tell by all the preparations around central park that it was going to be big! i decided that it would be fun to have a banner woven by the community. i could see in my mind's eye how beautiful it would be to hang this banner in the new offices of the organization.

I decided to do a 4 yard black cotton warp and was using the colorful Peruvian Pima Cotton thread for the weft. I asked friends to donate scraps of fabrics and yarns which were inserted randomly into the weaving. I am totally delighted with the resulting banner. Below are some pictures that Viktoria Vidali (co-founder of AIV) took of the event. Click the arrows to see the slideshow and the final banner images.
